Seasonal Self Care

“There shall be eternal summer in a grateful heart.” – Celia Thaxter

One thing Sandwich Mamas tend to have in common is that we all place self care on the back burner. We take care of everyone else’s needs and IF there is a smidge more time in our day, then we focus on ourselves. The problem is that there is NEVER a smidge more time for our care.

With a more relaxed routine during the summer, you can use the time to establish healthy self-care habits. Here are some practical tips to get you started:

  • Pack a summertime “self” tote to keep in your car.  Include:
    • Sunscreen – make sure to use it daily and use one that blocks both UVA and UVB rays.  Put it on 15 to 20 minutes before your sun exposure.  If you are out in the sun for extended periods, re-apply your sunscreen.
    • Lip balm – use one with SPF in it.
    • Hat – for scalp and face protection.
    • Moisturizer – use after exposure to salt or chlorinated water.
    • Sunglasses – UVA/UVB block required.
  • Remember to hydrate!  Drinking plenty of water is essential to replenish fluids lost by sweating. Increase the water consumption if you are also drinking caffeinated beverages.
  • Add more summer berries to your diet. They are loaded with antioxidants and vitamin C, which are great for repairing dry skin and hair. They do not hurt your waistline either!
  • Start an exercise program. Use the cooler time of the early morning to take a walk. Once you establish this habit, you can continue it throughout the year!
  • Make an appointment on your calendar for a hydrating mask, facial or bubble bath.
  • As much as possible, stay on a regular sleep routine. Not only will it help refresh you for your summer activities, it will make the transition back to school time easier as well.
  • When you jump in the shower, use an exfoliation product to remove dull and dry skin.  Moisturize after your exfoliation to hydrate your skin.  Liquid moisturizers are great for slightly dry skin, but creams are better for extremely dried out skin.
  • Do not forget your hair. Hair becomes dry and damaged with over-exposure to sun, chlorine or salt water.
    • Try a “leave-in” conditioner for extra moisturizing.
    • Get a trim to remove split ends.
    • Consider using hair care products containing SPF protection.

Okay, Mamas! It is time for your “timeout”! Go and take care of thyself!

xoxo Paula
