Not too long ago, I posted some chore ideas for young children to start their participation in home tasks. Since I became a Sandwich-mom when my youngest was three years old, I truly welcomed his enthusiasm for helping. Check out these additional ideas to consider for your children’s chores:
Meal preparation. You would be surprised at how much help your kids can provide while preparing meals. They can stir-up mixtures, tear lettuce or help in baking.
Baseboard dusting. My kids thought dusting looked so fun (HA!) so I would put old socks on both of their hands and let them wipe off the baseboards or windowsills while I was dusting other parts of the room.
Dishwasher duty. Our plastic storage container drawer was low so the kids could take all of the containers out, dry them off and stack them in the drawers.
Strip linens. Easy peasy…my kids were great at pulling off blankets and putting them in one pile and the sheets and pillowcases in another. Then I could swoop in and grab the linens for the wash.
Before y’all think I am a huge slave driver, I want to point out that some of these activities are now just habits for my kids. My daughter has been doing her own laundry (by choice) since she was eleven because she wanted to make sure that, her precious fashions were clean and available when she needed them. My son sets the table every night and wants to start making dinner on the weekends! Hallelujah! I am thankful that the foundation was set early so that when it came time for me to split my focus on two generations, I was prepared!

Have you introduced the chore idea to your young kids yet?

Love this! I’m trying to learn to let my daughter help with the things she wants to try, instead of limiting her to tasks she hates. It dawned on me recently that I shouldn’t really care which of the chores she does if she’s making a real contribution and learning to be responsible.
You are right Wendy. For a long time I had a list and the kids picked what chores they wanted to do. It the end result that is important! Love you!
You know I’m on board with the meal prep!!!! Great list to get the little ones involved! Gotta start pulling their weight or else I’m going to start charging them rent.
Lots of yummy love,
